This commissioned piece pushed every limit of my process. The eight-woman crew boat was not only the largest of my small-series sculptures but also the most technically challenging. The slender form of the racing shell and the precision required to capture nine distinct figures in motion forced me to invent new techniques and processes. Every rower, oar, and ripple of balance had to align perfectly or the illusion of speed would collapse.
The finished sculpture honors the power and unity of the “eight”, the fastest boat in competitive rowing. Each figure moves in perfect rhythm under the guidance of the coxswain, embodying teamwork at its highest form. It is about harmony, endurance, and the rare beauty of many individuals moving as one.
